Converting between the two clocks
- AM times: keep the hour. 7:15 am is 0715. Midnight hour (12:xx am) becomes 00xx: 12:45 am is 0045.
- PM times: add 12 to the hour. 7:15 pm is 1915. Noon stays 12: 12:30 pm is 1230.
- Minutes: never change. Remove the colon and write two digits for the hour.
- Back to 12-hour: for 1300 and later, subtract 12 and add pm. 2105 is 9:05 pm.
Common mix-ups
- 0000 and 2400 are both midnight. Military time for the start of a day is 0000.
- Noon is 1200, not 0000.
- “Hundred hours” is part of the spoken form only. Written military time does not include the word.
- A military time shows the local clock time. It does not include a time zone unless you add one.
